A great experience for any young musician. This event has been created for all of the percussionists in our nearby school districts. This event will be filled with performances, clinics, and Q&A sessions by college ensembles and their directors.

– Musicians Institute Los Angeles
Featuring a clinic by Stewart Jean
Drummer and educator based in Los Angeles, California. Currently the Program Chair for Drums at Musicians Institute in Hollywood, Stewart is a dedicated professional.
As Program Chair for Drums at MI Stewart steers the program down a path of success for his students. Authoring and co-authoring contemporary curriculum, developing innovative teaching methods and consistently providing a nurturing learning environment are some of the highlights Stewart has brought to Musicians Institute. Maintaining a steady drumming career Stewart has performed or recorded with Raul Midon, Bruce Kulick, Don Felder, Jimmy Buffett, Betty Wright, Sam Moore, Preston Smith, Bo Diddley, Christian Zallies, Diego Bertie and Pedro Suarez Vertiz.
Stewart received a Bachelors Degree in Music from the University of Miami as a graduate of the Studio Music and Jazz Program. While in Miami Stewart also served as Jazz coordinator for the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts.

Dr. Jeremy Brown has been teaching at MSJC since 2007.
He directs the Menifee Jazz Ensemble, a modern jazz group comprised of MSJC students and community members. The band performs contemporary and Latin arrangements of jazz standards, songs, and original compositions.
After doctoral studies and years of professional music performance in Austin, Texas, Jeremy moved to Southern California to continue playing and teaching music. Primarily a jazz drummer and classical percussionist, he has performed and recorded music in many genres and categories including small group and big band jazz, rock & roll, classical, blues, funk, world music, and avant garde. A busy performer and composer, catch the Jeremy Brown Quartet playing around the region.

Dr. Todd Miller has been teaching horn and percussion at Cal State Fullerton since 1971. In addition, he directs wind and percussion chamber music. He earned both his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Music degrees from the University of Southern California. Miller is principal timpanist with the Pacific Symphony and regularly performs both percussion and French horn with numerous Southern California orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic where he typically plays horn. He is an active studio musician and can be heard on multitudes of soundtracks including several Academy Award-winning movies scores including Out of Africa, Dances With Wolves and Titanic. In TV, he has worked on Columbo, A Team, Rockford Files, Greatest American Hero and JAG, under the baton of great conductors and composers from John Williams to Jerry Goldsmith. Mr. Miller was awarded the outstanding artist award at the 11th annual Orange County Arts Awards in 2010.
Robert Slack has been Principal Percussionist of the Pacific Symphony since 1993. He is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, completed Doctoral studies at S.U.N.Y, Stony Brook, and was a Tanglewood Institute fellow in 1989. An active performer throughout Southern California, he has appeared in the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Green Umbrella series, toured China with the San Diego Symphony, and has played in a variety of Broadway shows including Wicked, Evita, The Carman, and The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Robert is also a featured soloist with the Pacific Symphony and, under the direction of John Williams, performed the solo vibraphone part for Escapades for Vibraphone, Alto Saxophone, and Orchestra. In addition, he serves on the faculty at California State University, Fullerton and Irvine Valley College. Also active in the Jazz Field, Robert studied jazz improvisation with Charles Shoemake and jazz drums with Joe Morello, and has performed with Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, McCoy Tyner, and Ann Hampton Callaway.

Dr. Tod Johnson. As a soloist, Dr. Johnson’s premieres include David Maslanka’s Concerto for Marimba and Percussion Ensemble and Michael Colgrass’s Deja Vu for Percussion Quartet and Wind Ensemble, and he has recorded for Albany Records and for broadcasts on radio stations WQRS and WBLV. Johnson’s orchestral background includes positions with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra, the Chicago Civic Orchestra, and numerous regional orchestras in Michigan, Texas, Oklahoma, and Virginia. He has also performed with the internationally recognized Millar Brass Ensemble of Chicago and the Robert Hohner Percussion Ensemble. Dr. Johnson is an active researcher and guest lecturer on the subjects of muscle activity in snare drumming and four-mallet marimba transcriptions. He has lectured extensively in Texas, Oklahoma, and Virginia, at venues including universities, the Texas Music Educators Association convention, and the National Conference on Percussion Pedagogy. He currently serves as a vice president for the California chapter of the Percussive Arts Society.
We hope to create an inspiring experience by providing a purely educational atmosphere full of great percussion literature.
